Now Patients Can Read Our Notes

    Good Evening Everyone:

Make sure you take a look at this:

Starting Monday, Patients Can Read Your Notes: 5 Key Things (medscape.com)

    Federal Rules Mandating Open Notes

This would be a good subject to discuss regarding how it will impact the diagnostic process.  For example, the patient can now take their chart to any other clinician for a review without the clinician even knowing about it...

I think there are many issues that have to be addressed:

    1. The patient's degree of education and understanding influencing what they read out of the notes
    2. The clinician's degree of discomfort that may reduce the content of the notes and lead to problems further down the line
    3. The malpractice insurance agencies beginning to impose standards on the notes to reduce their liability

And, perhaps, many more.  All these could adversely influence the diagnostic process in that, now a clinician has to deal with how his or her thought processes are viewed in 'real time'.  My experience in managing hospitals and laboratories is that the closer one is being observed, the more this affects their work usually not for the better.
