A very interesting commentary by Jonathan Sherbino and Geoff Norman in the latest issue of Annals of Emergency Medicine:

Task Switching, Multitasking, and Errors: A Psychologic Perspective on the Impact of Interruptions

Thanks, David!  This paper is fascinating.  I do think that there is a significant impact of distractions/interruptions, which goes well beyond the moment and the loss of time.  Dr. Janet Neuze and colleagues did a similar study for radiologists some years ago, which was presented at SIDM.

Thank you for sharing this paper.

This has been an active area of research for nursing as this has been shown to lead to medication administration errors and "missed care." I am thrilled to see see this paper and attention to how distractions and interruptions influence diagnostic error.
