Gordon Schiff receives John M Eisenberg Award - Announced today

  • 1.  Gordon Schiff receives John M Eisenberg Award - Announced today

    Posted 05-13-2020 16:02

The Joint Commission and the National Quality Forum announced today (attached) that this year's recipient of the John M Eisenberg Patient Safety and Quality Award for Individual Achievement is our friend and colleague, Gordy Schiff.

Gordy has been a patient safety advocate forever, and has made fundamental contributions in many areas.  Much of his work has focused on medication safety, and fortunately for our SIDM community, on diagnostic quality and safety.  Gordy received the very first AHRQ research grant to study diagnostic errors, and his report on the 583 error stories he studied formed the basis for the DEER taxonomy that is now widely used to map out where breakdowns occur in the diagnostic process.   If you only read 1 of Gordy's works, I'd suggest this most recent one where he discusses his journey through the world of patient safety and diagnostic error.  A highlight of this article is Gordy's 21 suggestions for improving diagnosis - a draft copy is attached.

Thank you, Gordy, for all you have done for our field, and for being a true role model for how to provide enlightened, patient-focused, humanistic, and safe care for patients.

Gordy I can't think of anyone more deserving of this award than you.  Congratulations!    You cast a long shadow ~ you are never the first person at the mic during a conference, or the loudest voice in the discussion, but IMO you are the person who by humility, persistence, good science and great pragmatism evokes not only passion for improving diagnosis, but inspires belief by others that WE CAN DO THIS.   Thank  you for your dedication.

Tho' this is an individual award, it should be noted that a central aspect of Gordy's work has always been to collaborate with, also mentor, anyone and everyone in meaningful, creative works. Richly deserved congratulations, and Bravo to Gordy!
